Jude, The Lord’s Brother

JUDE, THE LORD’s BROTHER, mentioned in Matthew 13:55 and Mark 6:3, in both passages the Gr. word, ἀδελφός, G81, which denotes a primary relationship of kinsmen. However the term may mean both “brother” or “sister,” and it is so rendered, first masc. and second fem. in Matthew 13:55. Roman Catholic scholars have regarded the word as “cousin,” partly to clarify their doctrine of the perpetual virginity of Mary. However, in both passages (Matt and Mark), as well as the parallel in John 6:42, Mary is designated “mother,” which leaves no doubt that “brother” in the sibling sense is meant. This Jude seems also to have been the author of the Epistle of Jude (q.v.). See Brothers of Jesus.
