Joseph Estlin Carpenter
1844-1927. Unitarian minister. Educated at University College, London, he served Unitarian churches in Bristol and Leeds (1866-75) before becoming lecturer at Manchester New College. Subsequently he was principal of Manchester College, Oxford (1906-15). Prominent in his denomination, he had also a wide knowledge of Near Eastern studies and translated Ewald's* major work into English. His own books included The First Three Gospels (1890), The Composition of the Hexateuch (1902), and The Johannine Writings (1927).
