Jonas King

1792-1869. American Congregational author and missionary to Greece. Born in Hawley, Massachusetts, and educated at Williams College (1816) and Andover Seminary (1819), he was ordained in 1819, studied Arabic for a year, then went to Palestine under the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (1822-25). Returning home, he remained in Greece for a time, marrying Anetta Mengous in 1829. Assigned to Greece in 1830, he began a career of distinguished missionary and consular service. Besides founding a Greek Protestant church, King also started a school and wrote Christian literature in several languages. His Farewell Letter (1825) with his reasons for not becoming a Roman Catholic was translated into several languages. He died in Athens.
