John Wordsworth

1843-1911. Bishop of Salisbury. Elder son of Christopher Wordsworth,* he first attained distinction as a Latin scholar. From 1878 he worked on a critical edition of the Vulgate text of the NT, amassing and collating a vast amount of manuscript material. He gave the Bampton Lectures of 1881 on comparative religion, entitled The One Religion, and became the first Oriel professor of the interpretation of Scripture in 1883. Made bishop of Salisbury in 1885, he was the close friend and adviser of Archbishop E.W. Benson.* He hoped for church reunion on the basis of episcopacy, maintained relations with Eastern Churches and especially studied the Swedish Church. His writings include The Ministry of Grace (1901), a history of Christian ministry.
