John Wilbur Chapman
1859-1918. Presbyterian evangelist. Born in Richmond, Indiana, and educated at Oberlin College, Lake Forest University, and Lane Seminary in Cincinnati, he was ordained in 1882 and held pastorates in Ohio, Indiana, New York, and Pennsylvania, but devoted more than half of his ministry to evangelism. Once associated with D.L. Moody,* he worked during his last ten years with C.M. Alexander.* Evangelistic tours took him to a number of foreign countries as well as many large cities in the USA. He was the first director of the Winona Lake Bible Conference and contributed to the progress of other conference centers. In 1917 he was appointed moderator of the Presbyterian general assembly.
