John Trapp

1601-1669. English Bible commentator. Son of Nicholas Trapp of Kempsey, Worcestershire, he was born at Croome d'Abitot. Educated at Worcester Free School and Christ Church, Oxford, he became usher (1622) and headmaster (1624) of the Free School, Stratford-upon-Avon, and preacher at Luddington. He became vicar of Weston-on-Avon (1636). In the Civil War he sided with Parliament. Afterward he served as rector of Welford, Gloucestershire, but the former incumbent, Dr. Bowen, was reinstated in 1660, whereupon Trapp returned to Weston. He wrote commentaries on the whole Bible, furnishing an example of Calvinistic scholarship at its best, characterized by quaint humor and profound learning. The best-known edition is that of 1867-68.
