John Saul Howson

1816-85. NT scholar. Graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge, he served as teacher (1845-49) and then headmaster (1849-66) of Liverpool Collegiate Institute. From 1867 he was dean of Chester. Howson is remembered chiefly as co- author with W.J. Conybeare* of the influential work, The Life and Epistles of St. Paul (2 vols., 1852), which remains in print. Howson was chiefly responsible for the historical, geographical, and archaeological aspects of the work. He published also several other works on Paul and on NT subjects generally.
