John Murray

1741-1815. Founder of American Universalism. He was born into a well-off, Calvinistic family in Hampshire, England. His parents moved to Cork, Ireland, where this emotional man became a Calvinistic Methodist* shortly before he rejected Calvinism for the Universalism preached by John Relly. He was excommunicated by the Methodists; his wife and child died. He migrated in 1770 to America and preached his Universalist ideas throughout New England. After serving as a chaplain in the Revolutionary War, he settled in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and organized a Universalist congregation. After founding another church in Oxford, Massachusetts, he served as pastor from 1793 to 1809 of the Universalist Church in Boston. Paralysis in 1809 stopped his preaching that all men would ultimately be saved.
