John Henry Bernard

1860-1927. Archbishop of Dublin. Born in India, eldest son of a civil engineer, he was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, proved himself a brilliant scholar, and thereafter lectured at Trinity, where he was provost from 1919 until 1927. An outstanding administrator, he was dean of St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin (1902-11), bishop of Ossory, Ferns and Leighlin (1911-15), and archbishop of Dublin from 1915. His scholastic gifts are seen in some twenty books, including a commentary on John's gospel (1928), his popularity as a preacher in his university sermons, and his devotion to the arts in his presidency of the Royal Irish Academy from 1916 to 1921.
