d.1691. English Puritan and Nonconformist divine. Educated at University College, Oxford, he was ordained by a presbytery at Salisbury and became curate of Diptford, Devon. Later he was lecturer of St. Saviour's, Dartmouth. Ejected in 1662, he became a Nonconformist. In 1672 he was licensed as a Congregational to preach in his own house at Dartmouth. Persecuted in Devon, he removed in 1682 to London, but returned to Devon where he was instrumental in promoting the “Happy Union” of Presbyterians and Congregationalists in 1690-91. He is best known for his practical writings, which were usefully collected in six volumes in the nineteenth century and have now been reprinted as The Works of [[John Flavel]] (1968).
