John Augusta

jan) (1500-1575. Leader of the Bohemian Brethren.* The latter, following the suppression of the Taborites in 1453, possessed many of the evangelical and social views of the early Hussites, It was Augusta's hope to encourage his group to initiate the formation of a large evangelical party in Bohemia lacking doctrinal differences. This ambition led several Bohemian nobles to the Brethren. Negotiations, which were protracted and unsuccessful, were begun in 1533 with Luther, Bucer, and Calvin when Augusta assumed leadership of the Brethren. During the persecution of the Brethren, Augusta was held in prison from 1547 to 1564 by Ferdinand of Hapsburg. In 1564 Augusta tried to unite the Brethren with the Utraquists* in order to form a national evangelical church in Bohemia, but the attempt failed.
