Johannes Ernst Grabe

1666-1711. Anglican scholar. Born and educated at Königsberg, where he was appointed privatdocent in 1685, he questioned the validity of Lutheran orders and contemplated becoming a Roman Catholic. On P.J. Spener's recommendation, he went to England in 1697, seeking a church possessing apostolic succession. Ordained into the Anglican priesthood, he had close links with the Nonjurors.* On receiving a pension from William III, he gave himself to biblical and patristic research. He published Spicelegium S.S. Patrum ut et haereticum seculi post Christum natum I, II et III (1698-99), editions of Justin Martyr's First Apology (1700) and of Irenaeus (1702), and a transcript of Codex Alexandrinus (Septuagint) with numerous emendations (1707-9).
