Johann Georg Benedikt Winer

1789-1858. Protestant NT scholar. Born and educated in Leipzig, he became privatdocent in theology there. He was called to a chair at Erlangen in 1823, but returned to Leipzig as professor of theology (1832-58). He fixed the rules of grammatical interpretation of the NT, especially in his Biblisches Realworterbuch (1820). Of his many works, the most notable is his Grammatik des neutestlichen Sprachidioms (1821). W.F. Moulton* translated and edited the third edition of this work in 1870, and it is still invaluable within its limits, despite more recent advances in understanding Hellenistic Greek.
