James Hannington

1847-1885. Anglican missionary to East Africa. Born at Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, he was educated at Brighton and then entered business and the army. In 1868 he enrolled at St. Mary Hall, Oxford, to train for the Anglican ministry, to which he was ordained in 1874. In 1882 he offered to the Church Missionary Society and was appointed to Uganda. He reached Lake Victoria on his way out, but was forced to return to England suffering from malaria and dysentery. On his recovery he again offered to the CMS and was consecrated the first bishop of Eastern Equatorial Africa at Lambeth in 1884. In 1885 he reached Mombasa, and after superintending the work at Freretown near Mombasa he set off on foot with porters for Uganda. He reached Busoga on Lake Victoria, and there he was arrested and later killed on the orders of Mwanga, the treacherous Kabaka (ruler) of the Baganda.
