Jacobins

A name originally applied to French Dominicans whose first house in Paris was under the patronage of St. James and was located on Rue St. Jacques. As an intellectual center of the order it attracted many students, who undoubtedly promoted the term's popularization. When the radical Society of Friends of the Constitution began using these Dominican facilities early during the French Revolution, her members soon found the old term applied to them.
