Henry Wheeler Robinson

1872-1945. English Baptist scholar. Born in Northampton, he was educated at Edinburgh University and Mansfield College, Oxford, then studied at continental universities. He held Baptist pastorates at Pitlochry in Scotland and Coventry before becoming tutor in Rawdon Baptist College in 1906. Thereafter for fourteen years he showed the teaching skill and administrative gifts which he was to display most notably when he was appointed principal of Regent's Park College, a post he held until his retirement in 1942. Known widely in scholarly circles beyond his own denomination, he served also for seven years from 1934 as reader in biblical criticism at Oxford. His many works include The Religious Ideas of the Old Testament (1913; rev. 1956), The Christian Experience of the Holy Spirit (1928), and Redemption and Revelation (1938).
