Henry Wharton

1664-1695. Anglican scholar. Born at his father's rectory of Worstead in Norfolk and educated by him before entering Caius College, Cambridge, he studied diligently there under Isaac Newton and others. From 1686 he contributed very considerably-and without much acknowledgment-to W. Cave's Historia Literaria. Ordained under the canonical age because of his learning, Wharton worked first for T. Tenison,* producing treatises on celibacy and on the Scriptures, and for W. Sancroft.* In 1689 he took the oaths, separating from his Nonjuror* friends and ending his ecclesiastical hopes. The first two volumes of Anglia Sacra appeared in 1691-a masterly survey of English bishops and dioceses with a collection of relevant original texts. A third posthumous volume is unequal in quality.
