Henry Airay

1560-1616. Puritan divine. Born in Westmoreland, he was educated at the expense of Bernard Gilpin,* “the Apostle of the North,” both at a local school founded by him and at Queen's College, Oxford. He became provost of his college in 1598 and vice-chancellor of the university in 1606. William Laud* was accused of Romish tendencies before him in 1606 and narrowly escaped public censure. “A frequent and zealous preacher,” Airay delivered a series of lectures on Philippians in which he denounced popery and expounded evangelical Calvinism at its best.
