Hem of a Garment

HEM OF A GARMENT. Fringes or tassels, with a blue thread in each, on the borders of the Jewish outer garment (Num.15.38-Num.15.39). The word “hem” (Exod.28.33-Exod.28.34; Exod.39.24-Exod.39.26) is translated “skirt” in ASV. To “touch the hem of his garment” (niv “edge of his cloak,” Matt.9.20-Matt.9.21; Matt.14.36) denoted a reverent approach, not daring to lay hold of Jesus, but having faith in the efficacy of his miraculous power.
