Harold Henry Rowley

1890-1969. English Semitist and biblical scholar. Educated at Bristol and Oxford universities, he became successively minister of the United Church, Wells, Somerset (1917-22); professor in Shantung Christian University, China (1924-29); lecturer in Hebrew in University College, Cardiff (1930-34); professor of Hebrew in University College, Bangor, North Wales (1935-45), and in Manchester University (1945- 59). In addition to his many published contributions to scholarship (among which his studies of the linguistic and critical problems of the Book of Daniel take preeminent place), which were characterized by judicial wisdom and comprehensive and exact bibliographical knowledge, he excelled himself at the end of World War II by his efforts to restore international correspondence and cooperation among OT scholars. In the postwar years, as foreign secretary of the (British) Society for Old Testament Study, he gained worldwide esteem immense and well- merited.
