Gustaf Hermann Dalman

1855-1941. Biblical scholar. Of Moravian background, he served as professor of the Institutum Delitzschianum in Leipzig (1895-1902), director of the German Protestant Institute for Archaeology in Palestine (1902-17), professor at Greifswald (1917-25), and again in Jerusalem as director of his own Institute for the Study of Antiquity in the Holy Land (1925-41). His many writings are a mine of information for the student of the NT, though some of his conclusions are in need of revision in the light of more recent research. His works include a Grammar of Jewish-Palestinian Aramaic (in German, 1894); The Words of Jesus (1898; ET 1902); Sacred Sites and Ways (3rd ed., 1924; ET 1935); Jesus-Jeschua (1922; ET 1929); and Arbeit und Sitte in Palastina (7 vols., 1928-42).
