Geron

GERON gĭr’ ŏn (Γέρων, old man, senator). Geron, proper name in the ASV, is tr. “old man” in the KJV and “senator,” which fits both Gr. and context, in the RSV. Geron had the responsibility under Antiochus Epiphanes of compelling the Jews “to forsake the laws of their fathers” (2 Macc 6:1).

International Standard Bible Encyclopedia (1915)

Not much seems to be gained by translating with the Revised Version, margin "Geron, an Athenian," for "an old man of Athens" in 2 Macc 6:1.
