George Hickes

1642-1715. Nonjuror.* Graduate of Oxford where he later taught, he was ordained in 1666 and was briefly rector of St. Ebbe's, Oxford. While chaplain to the duke of Lauderdale he participated in Scottish church affairs. He was prebendary of Worcester where he later (1683) became dean, but he declined the bishopric of Bristol. Refusing allegiance to William and Mary, he was deprived of his deanery in 1690. He was in 1694 consecrated titular bishop of Thetford by the Nonjurors. His scholarship ranged from a specialized grammar and thesaurus to monographs on baptism, priesthood, and church order, editions of Thomas à Kempis and Fénelon, and a posthumously-published work, Constitution of the Catholic Church... (1716).
