Fulton John Sheen

1895- . Roman Catholic bishop and broadcaster. Born on a farm at El Paso, Illinois, he graduated from St. Viator College, Catholic University of America, and the University of Louvain (Ph.D., 1923). He was ordained in 1919, taught philosophy at Catholic University (1926-50), and then until 1966 was national director of the Society for Propagation of the Faith. From 1930 to 1952 his broadcasts of the “Catholic Hour” were heard around the world, while he was also in the same period preacher at St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York. His telecast “Life is Worth Living” was seen by an estimated 30 million each week from 1951 to 1957. He was made auxiliary bishop of New York in 1951, and bishop of Rochester in 1967. He has written many books on philosophical, devotional, and anti- Communist topics.
