Friedrich August Gottreu Tholuck

1799-1877. German Protestant theologian. Concentrating on the study of oriental languages at the universities of Breslau and Berlin, he was converted to Christ under Pietist influences and turned to the study of theology. After a brief period of teaching at Berlin, he was professor of theology at Halle for forty-nine years (from 1826), where he exerted a powerful influence on students and on the churches. A steadfast opponent of rationalism in biblical and theological studies, his important works include Die Lehre von die Sünde und dem Versöhner (1823), commentaries on Romans (1824), John (1827), the Sermon on the Mount (1833), Hebrews (1836), and the Psalms (1865), as well as a history of rationalism (1865). Through his connection with the revival movement and in his pastoral ministry among the students he did much to further the cause of believing scholarship in his day.
