Francis Patrick Kenrick

1796-1863. Roman Catholic archbishop and educator. Born in Dublin and educated in local schools, he graduated from the College of Propaganda in Rome and was ordained there in 1821. He taught at the college and seminary at Bardstown, Kentucky (1821-30), then in 1831 was consecrated bishop and became coadjutor in the Philadelphia diocese. He succeeded to the see in 1842. In 1851 he was named archbishop of Baltimore, which post he held until his death. Kenrick was a fine scholar, brilliant teacher, and able administrator. He published several erudite books on biblical, theological, and apologetic topics.
