Francis Hopkinson

1737-1791. American composer. Although a lawyer by profession and a musical amateur, Hopkinson was very active in the early musical life of Philadelphia. He was one of the first American-born composers, and took a great interest in church music as well as secular. He published A Collection of Psalm Tunes with a Few Anthems. He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
