Five Mile Act

1665. One of the statutes that comprised the Clarendon Code* by which Parliament sought to penalize those who did not subscribe to the liturgy and doctrine of the Church of England. The Five Mile Act forbade Nonconformist ministers and teachers to come within five miles of any city, town, or parliamentary borough. Offenders were subject to a severe fine.
