Ethical Movement

A quasi-religious movement having as its motto “Need, not Creed,” and as its goal a society embracing the ideals of love, loyalty, brotherhood, and peace. Instigated in 1876 by Felix Adler as the New York Society for Ethical Culture, its central purpose, as stated in the constitution adopted in 1906 at an international conference at Eisenach, was “to assert the supreme importance of the ethical factor in all the relations of life-personal, social, national and international, apart from theological considerations.” An outgrowth of the movement was the International Humanist and Ethical Union formed in 1952 “to promote an alternative to the religions which claim to be based on revelation on the one hand and to totalitarian systems on the other.”
