Ernst Wilhelm Hengstenberg

1802-1869. Lutheran scholar. Born at Fröndenberg near Hamm, he studied theology at the University of Bonn and became a private-dozent at Berlin in 1824, subsequently becoming professor there. During his early years at Berlin he was associated with Evangelicals such as August Neander, Frederick Strauss, and Theremin, but after 1840 he developed into an outstanding spokesman of Lutheran orthodoxy. Hengstenberg's influence was enhanced by the Evangelische Kirchenzeitung which he founded in 1827 and edited until his death. This organ combated rationalism and defended confessional Lutheranism with equal vigor. He also wrote several significant works in the field of OT studies.
