Edward Winslow

1595-1655. American Pilgrim leader. Born at Droitwich, Worcestershire, of prosperous parentage, he received a private education and became associated with John Robinson's* Separatist movement in the Netherlands, where he married Elizabeth Barker in 1618. Winslow sailed with the Mayflower, landing at Plymouth in December 1620. He was employed as an Indian agent and envoy to England on several occasions. He was often Plymouth's assistant governor from 1624 to 1646, and governor in 1633, 1636, and 1644. He helped to found the “Society for the Propagation of the Gospel among the Indians in New England” (1649). Archbishop Laud* imprisoned him for four months while he was in England in 1634, for teaching and performing marriages as a layman. After serving under O. Cromwell* in a maritime dispute, he died on the way back to Plymouth in 1655 and was buried at sea. His published narrative of the years 1621-23 are an invaluable source to historians of early Plymouth.
