Edward John Carnell

1919-1967. American evangelical theologian. Born in Antigo, Wisconsin, he received his college and seminary education at Wheaton College and Westminster Theological Seminary. He later won doctorates at Harvard and Boston. From 1945 to 1948 he was professor of philosophy and religion at Gordon College and Divinity School. In 1948 he joined the faculty of the recently founded Fuller Theological Seminary and served in several positions during his nineteen years there. He was president of the seminary (1954-59) and at the time of his death was professor of ethics and philosophy of religion. He was one of the leaders in the intellectual awakening of conservative evangelicalism after World War II. He excelled in giving a contemporary and relevant statement of the historic Christian faith. His books included An Introduction to Christian Apologetics (1948), Christian Commitment (1957), and The Burden of Sören Kierkegaard (1965).
