Edward Hayes Plumtre

1821-1891. Theological writer, classical scholar, and poet. Born in London, he was educated at University College, Oxford, and later became a fellow of Brasenose. Subsequently he held the chair of pastoral theology at King's College, London. In later years he held benefices in Kent and in 1881 became dean of Wells. He enjoyed a high reputation for classical learning. Apart from his translations of classical plays and books of poems written by himself, he helped in the translation of the Bible for the Revised Version, and contributed commentaries to various series. Theologically he was an eclectic; in his eschatology (The Spirits in Prison, 1884) he showed leanings toward the “larger hope.”
