Edmund Arbuthnott Knox

1847-1937. Bishop of Manchester. Educated at Oxford, where he became fellow and tutor (1869-84), he subsequently engaged in parish work before consecration as suffragan bishop of Coventry in 1894, whence he was translated to Manchester in 1903. He retired in 1921. Knox was a prominent evangelical; his opposition contributed much to the rejection of the revised Prayer Book (1927-28), and he strove vigorously against liberal and High Church tendencies. His writings include Sacrifice or Sacrament (1914), On What Authority? (1922), and The Tractarian Movement, 1833-1845 (1933).
