David Blondel

1590-1655. French Protestant church historian. Born at Chãlons-sur-Marne, he was educated at Sedan and the Genevan Academy. He was a country pastor at Roucy for most of his life, refusing a chair of theology at Saumur in 1631, though he was created “honorary professor” there in 1645. In 1650 he left Roucy for a professorship at Amsterdam. He wrote Pseudo-Isidorus et Turrianus Vapulans, which finally discredited the historicity of the False Decretals,* and this was probably his most important work. He also wrote De la primauté en l'église (1641), a defense of Reformed ecclesiastical polity, and Apologia pro Sententia Hieronymi de Presbyteris et Episcopus (1646), an attack on episcopacy. All his works are on the Roman Catholic Index* of Forbidden Books.
