Coadjutor Bishop

(Lat. adjutare, “to help”). Ecclesiastically, the bishop appointed as assistant, usually with right of succession. Such appointment is found most frequently in the Roman Catholic Church, particularly where a bishop is old or infirm. Modern usage distinguishes coadjutor from suffragan,* but seventeenth-century English treated the terms interchangeably.
