Claudius Apollinarius

Bishop of Hierapolis, c.175. An apologist for the faith and critic of heresy, he wrote four apologies (to Emperor Marcus Aurelius, against the Greeks, on Truth, and against the Jews), an encyclical against the Montanists* who became active during his episcopate, and a treatise on Easter. All the writings are lost, but his loyalty to the Roman state and his fierce opposition to the Montanists are clear from the use made of his writings by Serapion of Antioch and the historian Eusebius.
