Christopher Tye

c.1500-1573. English composer. For a time he was organist at Ely Cathedral, then sometime after the triumph of Protestantism he took orders in the Church of England, and died as rector of Doddington. A representative quantity of his Latin church music has survived and shows him to have been a superior composer. Most of his music with English text is adapted. His versification of fourteen chapters of Acts is inferior, but the music has yielded several much-used hymns. The short anthem, “O come ye servants of the Lord,” is also an adaptation.
