Charles McCallon Alexander

1867-1920. Evangelistic songleader. Born on a Tennessee farm of devout Presbyterian parents, he was educated in the state and at Moody Bible Institute, where he developed unusual ability in leading large groups of people in the singing of gospel songs. He conducted evangelistic meetings from 1902 with two of the most famous American revivalists, R.A. Torrey* and J.W. Chapman,* not only in America but also in Great Britain, Australia, and Asia. Both men were dignified and serious in their preaching, but “Charlie” Alexander preceded their evangelistic appeals with a period of “warming up” the audience with jovial humor and lively singing. His style was copied by many others and continues to influence evangelical churches in America.
