Charles Inglis

1734-1816. First Anglican bishop of Nova Scotia. Born and educated in Ireland, he was ordained in 1758 in London before being sent as a Church of England missionary to Dover, Delaware. In 1765 he went to New York to become assistant to the rector of Trinity Church. The American Revolution disrupted his life, for his church was burnt, his congregation scattered, and his property confiscated. In 1783 he sailed with a group of Loyalists to Nova Scotia. Four years later he was consecrated the first bishop of Nova Scotia. A devoted churchman and an incessant traveler, he did much to organize the Anglican cause in his diocese. Because of failing health he retired to his farm near Annapolis in 1796, but remained active, being named to the Council of Nova Scotia in 1809.
