Since titular “canon” involves all clergy, including minor orders, cloistered within a single house, the feminine usage (in English only since the seventeenth century) covers all members of a corresponding community of women living under a rule, although not necessarily under a perpetual vow. For all practical purposes there is little distinction from the designation “nun.”*
