Founder of the Theatine Order.* A noble of Vicenza, he was made protonotary apostolic by Julius II in 1505, ordained priest in 1516, and became a member of the Oratory of Divine Love. Concerned about the state of the secular clergy, he conceived the idea of a community of secular priests living together under the three vows while engaging in pastoral work. With Pietro Caraffa (later Paul IV) he began the Theatine Order, aimed at reforming the church from within, which played a part in the Counter-Reformation.
