Besai

BESAI (bē’sī, Heb. bēsay, down-trodden). The founder of a family that returned to Jerusalem from Babylon under the leadership of Zerubbabel (Ezra.2.49; Neh.7.52).



BESAI be’ zī (בֵּסָֽי, downtrodden). In Ezra 2:49 this man was listed as the father of a family of postexilic Temple servants. The group had returned from Babylonia under Zerubbabel, and occupied a lowly place in the Temple hierarchy.

The descendants of Besai (Nethinim) returned with Zerubbabel to Jerusalem (Ezr 2:49; Ne 7:52 = Basthai, 1 Esdras 5:31).
