Bernard Lord Manning

1892-1941. English church historian. Son of a Congregational minister, he was educated at Jesus College, Cambridge, where he was successively fellow, bursar, and senior tutor (1933). His chief historical publications, in which he argued that Dissent stood inside the common tradition of Latin Christendom, were The People's Faith in the Time of Wyclif (1919); The Making of Modern English Religion (1929); Essays in Orthodox Dissent (1939); and The Protestant Dissenting Deputies (1954). His scholarship, wit, and piety are seen in The Hymns of Wesley and Watts (1942), to which all hymnologists are indebted. Similar qualities pervade two volumes of sermons (1942-44). Of delicate health, he was mourned at his death by Christians of all persuasions.
