BAR-JONA (JONA, BAR JONAH) bär-jō’ nə (Βαριωνα̂ς, G981, son of Jonah). The Aram. equivalent of a family name identifying Simon Peter by his father, Jonah (Matt 16:17; KJV BAR-JONA). In John 1:42; 21:15-17 Peter is called the “son of John” (ASV, RSV; KJV “Jonas”).
