The canopy over a throne, couch, pulpit, altar, or other sacred object. It is used to describe also a square umbrella, supported on four poles, borne over a priest who carries the Host. In vaulted stone, it often forms a protective and decorative cover over recumbent figures on medieval tombs, especially in England, originating in the twelfth century.
