Archbishop

The title given to a bishop who has jurisdiction over the other bishops of a province besides exercising episcopal authority in his own diocese. The title seems originally to have been given in the fourth and fifth centuries to prelates of outstanding sees such as Rome or Alexandria, or when provincial synods were held in the chief town of the province under the presidency of the bishop.
