Aquarians
A description of certain people and sects in the early church (e.g., Tatian the Syrian and the Encratites*) who used water (aqua) instead of wine in the celebration of Holy Communion. Such people were also called Hydroparastatae (Gr. = “those who advocate water”). This practice was attacked by such men as Cyprian, Augustine, and Philaster.
