Is Windows Media player installed, and what version is it?
The easiest way is to find the actual Windows Media Player on your computer
and check its version. It is somewhere in your Start button menu, probably
under "Start >> Programs >> Accessories >> Entertainment."
You can also select "Start >> Search >> For Files or Folders"
and look for it.
When you locate the program, check the "About Windows Media Player"
until the "Help" menu for its version number.
How do I download Windows Media Player?
If you have Windows 95 or NT 4, you can download
version 6.4 from Microsoft. If you have Windows 98 or later, you can download
version 7.1. Download the file, exit all programs including your browser,
run the application and follow its instructions.
What if it still doesn't work?
- If you are uncomfortable with computers, you may want to get a friend.
- Do you have a sound card? Are you sure? Have you ever heard audio of any
sort come from this computer?
- Are the cables to the speakers connected?
- If you use external speakers, are they turned on?
- You may want to deinstall and reinstall the Windows Media Player. Be sure
you use the "Add/Remove programs" control panel. Don't just delete
the files.
- If you have Norton Utilities you may want to clean the registry. If you
don't know what this means, then ignore it. If you don't have Norton you can
try Microsoft's "RegClean.exe," which can be downloaded from their
web site.
