Discussion on Consequentialism

I'm primarily familiar with Utilitarianism and the work of Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill because of the connection with the development of the Neo-Classical School of Economics. From the lecture, it appears that philosophical thought progressed from Egotistical Ethical Hedonism to Altruistic Ethical Hedonism to Deontologicalism. However, Western political economy/economic thought seems to have progressed in the opposite direction . Here's a possible (but extremely loose) classification of the major Schools of Economic Thought as manifestations of philosophical thought:

1. Deontologicalism (Early Christian thought, i.e., Thomas Aquinas): Focus on moral duty to God over personal pleasure and eventual results.

2. Altruistic Ethical Hedonism (Merchantilism): Focus on the end result to bring the most possible collective benefit to the state or to the most number of (politically important) people.

3. Altruistic Ethical Hedonism (Classicalism, i.e., Adam Smith, Jeremy Bentham, John Struart Mill, Karl Marx): Focus on the end result to bring the most possible collective benefit to society as a whole.

4. Egotistical Ethical Hedonism (Neo-Classicalism, i.e., the Marginalists): Focus on the end result to bring the most possible personal benefit to the individual.
